Training on the "1Maji", "Avni Rustemi" and "Fan Noli" School

Milieukontakt Albania part of the “Ecosystem of Communication and Environmental Information" (ECIM), on the frame of the SENiOR-A program, is implementing the awareness campaign to inform the public about the use and attention towards chemicals hazards and on energy efficiency. Throughout November and December Milieukontakt Albania continued educational activities for pupils of age 12-15 years old. 3 new schools, "1 May", "Avni Rustem" and "Fan Noli" join the first group of 9 year schools. About 600 students from the three schools were trained about the impropriate and uncontrolled use of different products / detergents, which if are used according to the instructions on their labels may result very dangerous not only for humans health but also on the environment around us.

Students showed a great interest and desire for information. A good part of them had knowledge about our topics and helped us to build awareness and information on the way to handle and to use chemicals. During the conversation, followed by short films, children were willing to give various examples of chemicals that are part of our daily life and different ways of replacing them. This shows that the theme is also present in their families as children were giving examples that have been heard or learned from their parents. Teachers also contributed and actively participated on the subject making links with annual school curricula.

At the end of the activities on three schools was handed a certificate of appreciation for the fruitful cooperation between the two parties.

A very important component of its work is to develop capacity building programs based on interactive and participatory methods.

Training on the "Albanet" and "Drita e Diturise" School

Milieukontakt Albania part of the “Ecosystem of Communication and Environmental Information" (ECIM), on the frame of the SENiOR-A program, is implementing the public awareness campaign to inform about the proper use of hazardous chemicals and about energy efficiency. During October and early November Milieukontakt Albania conducted some extracurricula hours at “Albanët” and “Drita e Diturisë” 9-years schools for pupils of grade 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th. The main focus during the environmental education hours was the information and the awareness of the new generation on both topics. About 100 pupils from both schools were taught about the inappropriate and uncontrolled use of different products / detergents, which if are used without reading labels or instructions may result very dangerous not only for humans health but also for the environment. Many of the products (such as cosmetics, detergents etc.) that we use daily, eventhoughwe do not payattention,contain chemicals.

Quite extensively was discussed the other topic: energy sources and how to use it efficiently; which are the advantages and disadvantages that affects not only the environment but also the economy of our families and of the entire country. The presentations were prepared with graphics and short films making the hour more interesting and the conversation more interactive with the pupils.

They showed a wide interest on both topics, where there were addressed many questions on different issues raised recently in TV, such as the case of the pesticides used inappropriately during the cultivation of the cucumber or the case of the 40 licenses released for the construction hydropower plants along the Shkumbin river. The environmental education hours at “Albanët” school coincided with the ‘project week’, a practice already implemented from two years – says Ms. Ira Dinga coordinator of the project week. The topics selected by the students for this academic year were “Energy” and “Health”. The information transmitted was quickly absorbed by the students who asked further information as part of their projects or measures that could be taken and presented to the director. Much interest and a great appreciation came from the teachers of both schools, particularly from the “Drita e Diturisë” school, whose director Mrs. Lumturi Cela, expressed the interest that these curricula can be further developed and naturally followed by the practical work in the field, drafting of the conclusions and resulting with the change of the attitude.

At the end of the activities, for the fruitful cooperation, on both schools were handed a certificate of appreciation.

The opening conference of the project: “Rural Inclusive Social & Economic Opportunities (RISE-OP)”

The opening conference of the project: “Rural Inclusive Social & Economic Opportunities (RISE-OP)”

On 1st November, 2013 at the Përmet Multifunctional Center, took place the opening conference of the project. The meeting was attended by representatives of the LGUs, of various local and regional institutions, international organizations as well as many young interested women. The meeting was chaired by the Mayor of Përmet, Mr Gilberto Jaçe. In his speech he stressed that this project is focused on migration, create economy, job opportunities and new entrepreneurship for unemployed: rural women and youth without proper education and profession skills, without possibility to find a job.. The project will promote and use potential local resources of the Pёrmet area (natural, agricultural and cultural heritage resources) in order to revitalise and valorise artisanal and eco - agro tourism, enhancing capacities and access of the target groups in the local economy.
The project was the result of a long and participatory process which developed an inter local strategic plan of the Vjosa valley finalized in November 2012 and that was supported and officially signed by the chairman of the two municipalities and seven communes. The project is interrelated with all national and local strategies of the government.
Inter municipal cooperation will be the key to the success of the project - said in her opening speech Mrs. Mariarita Capirci, co-director of the Technical Secretariat Unit of the IADSA program - Italian Albanian Debt For Development Swap Agreement () .
An important part of the conference was the presentation of the mapping analysis for development of artisans and tourism services in the Vjosa valley, to better understand local dynamics and socio - economic resources. One of the main findings in Përmet, but also in Albania, is that our market still does not know the true value of artisans. It is largely undeveloped and mainly local practices are often isolated and depending on projects supported by various donors interested in this sector. With all the tradition and extensive experience in the field of artisans in the Përmet district, after the change of political system in 1990, the artisans of the state enterprise faced unemployment and many abandoned the tradition and migrated or specialised in other professions. As a result, the artisan sector and tourism services are developed only through private initiatives of small businesses. Old families of Përmet that have inherited the artisan ability have managed to preserve tradition meanwhile facing obstacles and difficulties. There is no synergy between the artisan and the existing tourism, or to other regions in the country or to other economic sectors such as agro - tourism, eco - tourism, fairs and various social engagements, marketing etc.
A message that goes to the development of artisan and tourism services in general is that artisanship is a part of our national culture and tradition and as such requires continuous attention, support and cooperation - said at the end of her speech Mrs. Valbona Mazreku general manager of Milieukontakt Albania, one of the partners in this project.

Finally, participants were invited to test some typical products of the area tenderly provided and prepared by CESVI, local partner, in collaboration with the Propërmeti consortium.

Energy eficiency! Usage and its understanding! - Survey with local citizens.

Results of the survey on energy efficiency

Milieukontakt Albania as part of the "Ecosystem of environmental Communication and Information” Network supported by SENiOR-A, is implementing the awareness campaign to inform the public about energy efficiency .

During June and July, Milieukontakt conducted a survey to highlight the level of information of the general public on energy efficiency at home or at their businesses. This survey was distributed and was completed by about 500 citizens from different areas, such as the lakeside park, Komuna e Parisit, the area at Casa Italia, Tirana e re, the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics, Medicine, etc.

Milieukontakt activists reported a caring behaviour of peoples toward energy efficiency and the new information that was provided. The survey results generally showed that citizens have no clear information on what is energy efficiency. The ‘energy efficiency’ meant only saving it, when in fact it wider meaning. It means using less energy to provide the same service or product.

During the campaign, to the citizens was explained not only the difference between efficiency and energy saving, but also the ways and tips on how to use energy in the most efficient way without giving up the benefits of the services.

Complete analysis of the survey can be found published at the official website of Milieukontakt Albania:

Chemical substances! Usage and its understanding! - Survey with local citizens.

Chemical substances! Usage and its understanding! - Survey with local citizens.

Chemical substances can be found everywhere, not only into the detergents but also into the walls, their paints, home flavourings, carpets, clothes etc. We often use at home products that might be dangerous such as cleaning solutions, medicines, insecticides, adhesive materials, cosmetics, children's toys, etc. Many studies have shown the risks posed by chemicals found in cleaning products for domestic use. They can cause: infertility, cancer, asthma, kidney trouble, liver and lung disturbance, psychological disorders etc.

During June and early July 2013, Milieukontakt Albania conducted a survey aiming to point out the information level of the general public on the risks presented by the presence of various chemicals in products that people use in everyday life. This survey was distributed in an electronic form through the official website of Milieukontakt, other social networks, email list and Ekolevizja newspaper. 645 citizens from various areas of Tirana, such as the lakeside park, Tirana e re, Komuna e Parisit, the area at Casa Italia, the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics, Medicine, etc. took part in the survey. During the survey activists of Milieukontakt had free conversations with citizens about the use of chemicals and attention on the danger they pose.

In general, results of the survey showed that although citizens have adequate information on the presence and hazardous chemicals in various products used at home and for personal hygiene, they remain highly dependent on their use and only 25 % of them used alternative products for cosmetic purposes. Some products that might cause health problems there are alternative substitute products, such as: washing with abundant water and soap, vinegar, baking powder, lemon, olive oil, salt, etc.

It is concerning the fact that more than half of interviewed did not use protective tools or use them rarely when cleaning products contained high levels of chemicals.

Hazardous materials should be stored in safe places and a special attention should be paid to children who should not have contact with detergents, batteries, pesticides, paints and solvents. More attention should also be paid in toys and children's clothes as there are hazardous chemicals found according to the recent studies. 24 % of interviewed have had personally or in their relatives, cases of side effects when using different detergents or products of personal hygiene.

After being informed, on the chemical elements present in various products and also on usage of alternative products, it was obvious the approval of citizens to substitute them with natural products. Activists disseminated to the citizens leaflets on the danger of chemicals in some products, domestic cleaning detergents and cosmetic products, as well as information on some of their products substitutes. Citizens showed great interest on this information and encouraged us to widen the campaign.. Some of the recommendations given by citizens during conversations were:

  • The correct implementation of the law through having control, sanctions and restrictions on sales of these products using preventive policies;
  • Communication with traders or their producers to replace dangerous products with pro - BIO natural products;
  • Tax relief and promotion of industry that trades BIO natural products.

The surveys and conversations with citizens are part of the awareness campaign, undertaken by Milieukontakt to inform the public about the use and attention towards chemicals hazards. This campaign is implemented in the frame of the project “Ecosystem of Communication and Environmental Information" (ECIM ) supported by SENiOR – A program .
